The Christian Walk, Pt.1…In The Beginning
It will be necessary to address a few topics, briefly, in order, to set things up for future writings. An understanding of the spirit, soul and body is very important to grasp in order to truly walk victorioiusly in the Spirit of God and to truly hear His voice. The insight of the spirit, soul and body, of course, comes from the scriptures, but are augmented and commented by Watchman Nee. His writings should be required reading, second only to God’s Word, for anyone desiring to become a disciple of Jesus. My prayer and goal is to NOT reason or intellectualize but to reveal to you what I have been revealed by My Father. I cannot teach you, but the Spirit of God must speak through this writing and ring true in your spirit. The Spirit of God must speak to you. This is true of any teaching from anyone. God must Speak!!!
John 1:1, “In the Beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”
At first, humans walk on this earth in an unregenerated state, ( NOT begotten from above– not born again), knowing not the poor and pitiful state, of the Soul (mind, will and emotions) and the Flesh (body), that clouds one’s conscience. In fact, because of the sin of Adam, all are born “of water” (natural birth-John 3:5) a bipartite being; that is, the combination soul/dead to God spirit and the flesh (the spirit becomes one with the soul while the soul rises up to command the spirit with absolutely no communion or fellowship with God or His Spirit). Only at regeneration (begotten from above–born again) does the Word of God separate the soul and spirit.
Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Once again a tripartite being able to commune with the Godhead. Our spirit receives the Holy Spirit.
In the beginning, Adam was created in the image of the Godhead, “let us create…”. This means Adam was created with a spirit, soul and body. He was called a “living soul.” Subsequently, Eve inherited from Adam that same nature: spirit, soul and body. Before Her creation, Adam received one command from God, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat., for in the day that you eat from it you shall die.” Eve was not around when this command was given. She heard it from her “head” which was her husband Adam. It was not revealed to her in her spirit but her intellect (mind) or soul.
The serpent, Satan, came along and tempted, separately, the spirit, soul and flesh of Eve.
| Gen 3.1 | Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which Jehovah God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden? |
| 2 | And the woman said unto the serpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat: |
| 3 | but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. |
| 4 | And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: |
| 5 | for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil. |
| 6 | And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. |
| 7 | And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves aprons. |
In one fell swoop, Eve was tempted with and succumbed to: the “lust of the flesh”, the “lust of the eyes” and the “pride of life”.
Genesis 3:6
- And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food; which is, “the lust of the flesh” = Body
- and that it was a delight to the eyes; which is the “lust of the eyes” = Soul
- and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise (like God); which is the “pride of life”= Spirit
